Enlightening the World; AIDS and India, Melinda French Gates

Here is a brief free-write of just a few of the obvious literary devices I saw immediately. I hope to encourage readers to realize how important this knowledge is to society, as well as, take a stand and assist in the terminating of this world-wide issue. I also hope to point out a few instances where the author could’ve been more precise in their writing to further persuade readers.
Gates’ article, AIDS and India, was both informative and encouraging. Gates wrote to a world-wide audience as she displayed the hard facts of reality.  Her purpose in writing, being to bring to attention, the harsh truth of the happenings in India. As well as, to inspire readers to take a stand and make a difference. Gates uses a variety of literary devices to appeal to her desired audience, as well as deep, hidden emotion that can be read between the lines.
Melinda Gates, wife of the infamous Bill Gates, stated that she and her husband started a foundation based on the shared belief that every child in this world deserves a chance at good health. The reality being, “more than 10 million children die every year, and two-thirds of them are dying from diseases that could be prevented with low-cost intervention.” Here, Gates uses both pathos and hard evidence to demand attention and call to action. She firmly states her ideal goal, “…every child deserves a chance at good health.” While also explaining that this ideal is a very possible goal to accomplish, “…dying from diseases that could be prevented with low-cost intervention.” The heartbreaking problem is clearly displayed and the solution, simple.
Gates gave multiple solutions to this horrific problem. For those who are financially willing and able, she extended the invitation, to donate to Global Fund- an organization designed to help fight AIDS. Additionally, catering to all people, no matter their status, Gates also gives us a friendly reminder to educate those around us about the disease and its harmful effects.
I stand alongside Melinda Gates as I too, am confident that “India can prevail against AIDS.” The result being, that children with thrive, economies will boom, democracies will flourish…” as we together make a difference. Let us be informed, let us educate, and let us be empowered so we too may empower others. Together we can overcome the odds.
